Prep Hoops Roundup: Bear River improves in Region 12 with win over Mtn. Crest

GARLAND – Jake Dahle scored 25 points and Bear River hit 19 of 20 free throws in a 65-54 region victory over Mountain Crest on Wednesday.

Bear River (13-3, 3-1 Region 12) outscored Mountain Crest (6-10, 1-3) 18-8 in the third quarter to take command.

The Mustangs mounted a comeback bid in the last stanza but the Bears went 8 of 9 from the charity stripe to ice the game.

Mark Huber netted 14 and Ren Fonnesbeck added 10 points for the Bears. Jacob Olsen grabbed eight rebounds.

Bear River held Nick Nethercott, Mountain Crest’s leading scorer, to only five points. Bear River coach Scott Hunt gave much of the credit for the defensive effort to Wyatt Roholt.

“We changed the lineup and started Roholt to take advantage of his quickness on defense and because he can get to the rim,” Hunt said.

BEN LOMOND 48, PARK CITY 40

OGDEN – Park City led 14-4 after the first quarter but Ben Lomond (2-13, 1-5 Region 11) outscored the Miners (4-11, 1-5) 44-26 the rest of the way for the Scots’ first region win.

Tayshon Doss led Ben Lomond with 11 points. Andrew Ormond and Stephon Watson added nine points apiece and Sudan Puk had seven rebounds.

MORGAN 71, JUDGE MEMORIAL 65 (2OT)

SALT LAKE CITY – Despite trailing 42-30 going into the fourth quarter, Morgan prevailed in a marathon contest at Judge Memorial to stay unbeaten in region play.

Cade Russell and Laine Carter each scored 16 points to lead Morgan (15-2, 4-0 Region 13). Trey Miles had 14 points and Tyson Hurd added 11.

STANSBURY 67, OGDEN 53

STANSBURY – Stansbury took a 26-21 lead into the locker room, then outscored Ogden 20-11 in the third quarter in the region contest.

Isaiah Coria paced Ogden (4-12, 2-4 Region 11) with 19 points and Carson White scored 14.

With the win, Stansbury (7-9, 5-1) remains in first place in Region 11.

TOOELE 46, BONNEVILLE 40

TOOELE – Bonneville (5-10, 2-4 Region 11) fell on the road to Tooele (6-7, 4-2).


GIRLS BASKETBALL

ROY 54, BOUNTIFUL 26

BOUNTIFUL – Josie Williams scored 35 points to lead Roy to the region road win at Bountiful. The Royals outscored the Braves 17-3 in each of the first and fourth quarters.

Brittney Hatch added nine points for Roy (12-3, 3-0 Region 5).

Gabby Fleurant scored seven points to pace Bountiful (2-13, 0-3).

VIEWMONT 53, WOODS CROSS 46

WOODS CROSS – Viewmont took a 24-16 halftime lead over Woods Cross and held off the Wildcats in the fourth quarter for the region road win.

Mercedes Staples scored 21 points to lead Viewmont (13-1, 3-0 Region 5). Mckenna Morris added nine points, all on 3s, and Melissa Sorenson hauled in six rebounds.

Olivia Barton scored a game-high 23 points for Woods Cross (11-6, 2-2).

LAYTON CHRISTIAN 48, ST. JOSEPH 35

OGDEN – Layton Christian outscored St. Joseph 25-16 in the second half to pull away.

Tess Henry scored 14 points and Faith Meza added nine for Layton Christian (8-10, 3-2 Region 16).

Virginia Tomon paced St. Joseph (4-7, 1-4) with 20 points and 20 rebounds. Kathleen Von Hoffman added six points and seven rebounds.

NORTH SUMMIT 72, UTAH MILITARY 13

RIVERDALE – Raegan Furniss scored 10 points for Utah Military (1-10, 0-5 Region 16) but it wasn’t enough as the Thunderbirds fell at home to North Summit (11-6, 4-1).
