Prep Hoops Roundup: Morgan girls win region title on late Stapley free throws

SALT LAKE CITY — Morgan left it late, but did enough at the end to eke out a road win.

Trailing 40-39 with 0.5 seconds left, Marcie Stapley knocked down two free throws as Morgan (12-10, 7-1 Region 13) clinched a share of the Region 13 championship with a dramatic 41-40 win Thursday at Judge Memorial (8-13, 3-5 Region 13).

Judge took the lead with eight seconds left and Morgan called timeout to draw up a play. The ball went to Stapley, who was fouled right before the buzzer.

The foul shots were Morgan’s only two points in the final frame. Stapley had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Jaci Jensen added 10 points and three steals.

BEAR RIVER 60, SKY VIEW 46

GARLAND — Three players scored in double-figures as Bear River (5-13, 2-6 Region 12) led in each quarter in a win over Sky View (4-16, 2-6 Region 12).

Rachel Fronk and Natalie Cottle led the Bears with 13 points each. Cailee Sidwell scored 11. The win means Bear River and Sky View are tied for Region 12’s fourth and final playoff spot with two games remaining.

LAYTON CHRISTIAN 50, ST. JOSEPH 24

LAYTON — A 23-8 halftime lead propelled Layton Christian (10-13, 5-5 Region 16) to a big win over local foe St. Joseph (6-13, 3-7 Region 16).

St. Joseph’s Virginia Tomon tallied another double-double to lead all scorers with 15 points and 23 rebounds.

Jada Wyms led LCA with 13 points and Danyale Thomas scored eight of her 10 points in the second half.

OGDEN 41, PARK CITY 28

OGDEN — Makin Clarke scored 15 points and Aleah Knowles added 10 as Ogden (3-15, 3-7 Region 11) kept Park City (0-20, 0-11 Region 11) out of the win column for the season.

The Tigers led 22-11 at halftime.
